What do German cockroaches look like and where do you see them? Usually found in the kitchen area, this pest is small, 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch in length, and medium yellowish-brown. German roaches could be distinguished from other roaches by two dark parallel stripes on the anterior, dorsal part of the thorax. If it isn’t the size of your thumb and it’s reddish brown to black, it is a female wood roach. If it is dark mahogany and the size of your thumb, then it is a smoky brown roach. If it is bigger (up to 1.5 inches), has wings, and is reddish-brown with a lighter edge over the head, then it’s an American roach.
With a global distribution as a one of the kind roach species, the mature female German roach can lay 35 to 45 eggs cases or called ootheca, which also encapsulates multiple eggs. When these eggs hatch in about 1 month, the nymphs flourish to survive and develop into adults between 6 weeks to 6 months. German roaches are fast breeders and they can multiply normally 3 to 4 generations per year. Like most other species of cockroaches, German cockroaches are nocturnal pests. They are most commonly found inside, it prefers wet, humid conditions and is typically found in kitchens and bathrooms in homes and commercial properties.
Adults are half an inch long, light to medium brown with 2 dark, distinctive strips behind the head. The young are wingless, smaller and much darker in color, with a light stripe on their backs. German cockroaches will eat anything. They stay near food and water source. Females reproduce one egg capsule every 3-4 weeks. Each capsule contains 25-45 eggs. Infestations are usually found in kitchens, bathrooms, but can inhabit different areas if there’s a heavy population or you have run them into each other with the repellent effect of insecticides.
If the population is large enough, they will spill over to other chambers. These roaches are mostly active at night. If German roaches are seen active during the day, it most likely is due to overcrowding in their hiding places or a shortage of food and water supply. Cracks and crevices are their harborage areas; they spend about 75% of the time in such harborages. First instar nymphs require a crack of about 1/32″ whereas, adults need inch width. German cockroach nymphs are smaller than most other cockroaches; thus, they have the ability to conceal themselves in many places and stay protected.
